Why Your Business Is Not Showing on Google Maps

You search for your own business on Google Maps and it is not there. Or it is there, but three competitors appear above it and one of them is further away and newer than you.
These are two different problems. They have different causes and different fixes, and most advice online mixes them together. Work out which one you have before you change anything.
First, find out which problem you have
Open Google Maps and search your exact business name, as it appears on your trade licence.
If nothing comes up, your profile is missing, unverified, or suspended. That is a visibility problem.
If your profile comes up but you cannot find it when you search by category — "dental clinic Dubai Marina", "AC repair Jumeirah" — then you exist but you are not ranking. That is a competition problem.
The rest of this splits along that line.
If you are not showing at all
You never verified. Creating a profile is not the same as verifying it. Unverified profiles do not appear. In the UAE the common methods now are video verification, where you record a short walkthrough showing your premises, signage and equipment, and postcard verification, where a code is posted to your address and arrives within a couple of weeks. If your domain is already verified in Google Search Console, you may get verified instantly.
You have been suspended. Suspensions are usually silent — the profile simply stops appearing. Two causes dominate in this market.
The first is your business name. Google requires the name on your profile to be your actual business name, as customers know it and as it appears on your licence. Nothing added. "Al Noor Cleaning Services" is fine. "Al Noor Cleaning Services Dubai | Best Deep Cleaning" is a guideline violation, and it is one of the most common suspension triggers there is. No city, no taglines, no service keywords.
The second is your address. It must be the physical place you operate from and it must match your trade licence. Mismatches between licence address and profile address are a recurring cause of suspension for UAE businesses specifically.
Your address does not qualify. If you work from a flexi-desk, a virtual office package, or a shared floor in a business tower, eligibility is genuinely conditional rather than automatic. Google wants a location with your signage where a customer could actually find you. A PO Box on its own usually triggers additional checks.
If you have no premises customers visit — most trades, mobile services, home maintenance — you should not be listing an address at all. Set up as a service area business instead, define the areas you cover, and hide the address. Trying to force an address you cannot substantiate is how profiles get suspended.
There are duplicates. Two profiles for the same business compete with each other and Google may suppress one. This happens often after a rebrand, a move, or when a previous employee or agency created a listing you never knew about. Search your business name and any former name.
If you are showing but not ranking
Google weighs three things for local results: how relevant your profile is to the search, how close you are to the searcher, and how prominent your business is generally.
You cannot change distance. The other two are where the work is.
Relevance is largely about whether your profile actually says what you do. The primary category matters more than anything else on the profile — "dental clinic" and "cosmetic dentist" produce different results. Add secondary categories for genuine services. Fill in the services list properly. Use the full 750 characters of the description and write it in plain language, describing what you do and where, not marketing copy.
Prominence is mostly reviews and the rest of your presence on the web.
On reviews, three things matter: how many you have relative to competitors, how recent they are, and whether you reply. Ten reviews from the last three months usually outperform forty from three years ago. Replying to every review, including the negative ones, is a signal in itself.
Ask for reviews properly. A short message after a completed job, with a direct link, converts far better than a card on the counter. Never buy reviews — removal and suspension are both real outcomes.
Consistency across the web. Your name, address and phone number should be identical everywhere they appear — your website, directories, social profiles, industry listings. Inconsistency makes it harder for Google to be confident the listings all describe the same business.
Photos and activity. Profiles that are updated get treated as live businesses. Add real photos of your premises, your team and your work — not stock images. Post updates occasionally. This is a small factor but it is free.
The three mistakes worth avoiding
Keyword stuffing the name. Covered above, but it bears repeating because it is the single most common way UAE businesses lose their profile, and it is always done with good intentions.
Using a home address without thinking it through. If your business runs from home and customers do not visit, use a service area business. Do not list your residential address.
Setting it up and leaving it. A profile created three years ago with old hours, a disconnected number and four reviews is working against you. Wrong opening hours in particular do direct damage — a customer who arrives at a closed clinic does not come back, and often leaves a review saying so.
What happens once it works
This part gets overlooked.
A working Google Business Profile does not send people to your website. It sends them to your phone and your WhatsApp, directly, with one tap, from the Maps app. That is the point of it.
Which means the enquiries arrive during working hours, when your team is with customers, from people who are comparing two or three businesses at once and will book with whoever answers first.
Fixing your Maps presence increases the number of enquiries you get. It does nothing about whether you can answer them. If those calls and messages are already going unanswered while your team is busy, more of them will not help — it just moves the loss further down the line.
Worth fixing both.
