How to Get Your Business Mentioned by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity

Ask ChatGPT for the best dental clinic in Dubai Marina. Then ask Perplexity the same question. You will get two different lists.
This is not a quirk. Analysis of 680 million AI citations by Profound found that only 11 percent of domains cited by ChatGPT were also cited by Perplexity. A separate study of 118,000 responses by Whitehat SEO arrived at the same number independently. Three different methodologies, one conclusion: these engines are looking at almost entirely different sets of businesses.
So "how do I show up in AI search" is the wrong question. There is no AI search. There are three or four systems with different plumbing, and being visible in one tells you nothing about the others.
Here is what the 2026 research actually shows, and what a service business in the UAE can do about it.
The finding that undoes most SEO advice
Ahrefs analysed 15,000 queries and found that only about 12 percent of the URLs cited by AI tools also appear in Google's top ten for the same query. Other studies put it further out: roughly 80 percent of pages cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot do not rank in Google's top 100 at all.
Ranking on Google and being cited by an AI assistant are close to unrelated problems.
The second finding is harder for anyone who has spent money on SEO. Across the 2026 citation studies, backlinks show weak to neutral correlation with AI visibility. LLMs do not crawl link graphs the way Googlebot does, so the thing your SEO agency has been billing for does comparatively little here.
What does correlate? Brand mentions. A synthesis of citation studies found brand search volume to be the single strongest predictor of AI citations, and branded entities roughly six and a half times more likely to be cited than unbranded ones. Businesses in the top quarter for web mentions get around ten times the AI visibility of those in the bottom quarter.
The short version: being talked about beats being linked to.
The three engines work differently
ChatGPT runs on Bing's index. Its citations show roughly 87 percent alignment with Bing's top results, so Bing visibility matters far more than most businesses realise, and almost nobody optimises for it. Within ChatGPT's ten most-cited sources, Wikipedia alone accounts for nearly half. It leans towards encyclopedic, established sources — the average domain age of a ChatGPT-cited source is around 17 years.
It is also stingy. One study of 34,234 responses found ChatGPT named a brand in only 0.59 percent of answers. Perplexity did it 13 percent of the time. That is a 20-fold difference in how often you even get the chance.
Perplexity maintains its own index and crawls continuously. Reddit makes up about 47 percent of its top sources. It rewards fresh, well-structured pages it can quote directly. It is also the most likely to name a business outright, which makes it the easiest early win.
Gemini and Google AI Overviews track traditional Google rankings more closely than either of the others. If your SEO is working, this is where it pays off. LinkedIn also appears among the top cited sources for AI Overviews.
Optimising for one of these does not cover the others. Brands appearing across four or more platforms are nearly three times more likely to show up in ChatGPT than single-platform brands.
What actually moves the needle
In rough order of leverage for a service business:
Get mentioned somewhere other than your own website. Research consistently shows earned media outperforming brand-owned content for AI citation rates by a wide margin, in some analyses by more than 300 percent. A write-up in a local publication, an entry in a credible directory, an interview, a supplier's case study. Your own site saying you are the best clinic in Marina counts for very little. Someone else saying it counts for a lot.
Get your entity right. Consistent name, address and phone number everywhere. Google Business Profile complete and accurate. LinkedIn company page filled in. Organization schema on your site with a sameAs list linking your social profiles together. This is what lets a model resolve that all these mentions refer to one business.
Front-load your answers. One analysis found around 44 percent of ChatGPT's citations came from the first 30 percent of a page. Put the answer in the first sixty words of a section, then explain. Burying the answer under three paragraphs of preamble is now a ranking problem, not just a readability one.
Publish recently, and keep publishing. About 65 percent of AI crawler traffic targets content published in the past year, and only 6 percent touches anything older than six years. A page you wrote in 2022 and never revisited is close to invisible to these systems.
Use FAQ schema and answer-shaped headings. Write headings as the questions people actually ask, then answer them immediately underneath. This is the single cheapest structural change available, and most sites in this market have not made it.
Reddit and YouTube, if your category has them. SE Ranking's study of 129,000 domains found businesses with heavy Reddit brand mentions averaged around seven ChatGPT citations against 1.8 for those with barely any. Ahrefs found YouTube mentions had the strongest single correlation of any signal with appearing in ChatGPT and AI Overviews. Neither is easy to manufacture, and both should be earned rather than gamed.
What does not work
llms.txt. This keeps appearing in GEO advice, including from people selling GEO services. As of 2026, the major LLM crawlers do not fetch it. It is a proposal, not a standard. Adding it costs nothing and does nothing.
Buying backlinks for AI visibility. The correlation is weak. Spend the same money on getting mentioned somewhere real.
Keyword stuffing. These systems are reading for meaning, not density. Repetition makes a page worse at being quoted, because a quotable passage has to make sense on its own.
Blocking the crawlers by accident. Check your robots.txt and any firewall rules for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended and ClaudeBot. Plenty of sites block these without realising, often because a security plugin did it by default. You cannot be cited by a system that cannot read you.
How to check where you stand, in ten minutes
Open ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity in three tabs. Ask each the same five questions a customer would ask. For a dental clinic in Dubai that would be something like:
Best dental clinic in Dubai Marina. Where can I get teeth whitening in Dubai. Which Dubai clinics treat sensitive teeth. Dental clinic near Dubai Marina open on Saturday. How much does teeth whitening cost in Dubai.
Write down who gets named, in what order, and whether you appear at all. Do the same for three competitors.
Then repeat it in a month. That is the whole measurement method. Everything else is a paid tool doing this at scale.
Two things to expect. You will probably not appear in ChatGPT even if you appear in Perplexity, for the reasons above. And whoever does appear will often be a directory listing or an aggregator rather than a clinic, which tells you what kind of page these systems prefer to quote.
The uncomfortable part
This window is open now and closing. In North America the equivalent gap closed within about eighteen months. In the GCC, both the English and Arabic sides are still wide open, and Arabic especially, where there is very little competition for the questions customers actually ask.
The businesses that show up in these answers in two years will mostly be the ones that started being mentioned this year.
We built the AI visibility check into NeuraLake because most businesses have never run it. The free analysis puts a fixed set of buyer questions to ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, records who gets named, and compares you against five competitors near you. It also covers your website, your Google profile, your reviews and what your competitors are publishing.
Common questions
How do I get my business mentioned by ChatGPT? ChatGPT relies heavily on Bing's index and on established, encyclopedic sources. The highest-leverage actions are earning mentions on third-party sites it already trusts, getting your entity data consistent across the web, and structuring pages so the answer appears in the first sixty words of a section.
Why does Perplexity mention my business but ChatGPT does not? They use different indexes. Only around 11 percent of domains are cited by both. Perplexity crawls the web itself and leans on Reddit and fresh content, while ChatGPT follows Bing and prefers older, more established sources.
Do backlinks help with AI search visibility? Far less than with traditional SEO. The 2026 studies show weak to neutral correlation. Brand mentions across news, forums and reviews are a much stronger predictor.
Does llms.txt do anything? Not currently. The major AI crawlers do not fetch it. Ignore anyone selling it as a GEO service.
How long does it take to appear in AI answers? There is no fixed timeline, and anyone promising one is guessing. What the data supports is that recency matters, entity consistency matters, and third-party mentions matter more than anything you publish on your own site.
